Sobhuza II
1899 — 1982 · King of Eswatini; holds the longest verified reign of any monarch in recorded history (82 years)
Nkhotfotjeni Mona — regnal name Sobhuza II — was born in Zombodze, in what was then the British Protectorate of Swaziland (now the Kingdom of Eswatini), on the twenty-second of July 1899. He succeeded his father Ngwane V to the Swazi throne in December 1899, four months after his birth, when his father died unexpectedly. He was four months old.
His mother Lomawa Ndwandwe served as Queen Regent until his formal installation as Ngwenyama (King) in December 1921. He reigned from his installation in 1921 until his death on the twenty-first of August 1982 — sixty-one years as installed sovereign, and eighty-two years and one month from the date of his de facto accession. This is the longest verifiable reign of any monarch in human history, longer than Louis XIV of France (seventy-two years) or Queen Elizabeth II (seventy years).
His reign navigated three distinct political eras: the colonial period (1921 to 1968), the post-independence constitutional monarchy under the 1968 Swaziland constitution, and the executive-monarchy period that followed his 1973 abrogation of the constitution. He negotiated Swazi independence from Britain in September 1968, recovering land that had been alienated to white settlers under the colonial concessions of the late nineteenth century — a recovery process that ran across the entirety of his reign.
He fathered, by contemporary tribal-historian estimate, between seventy and two hundred children. The current king of Eswatini, Mswati III, is his son.
He was a senior figure in continental Pan-Africanism throughout his later decades, advising Haile Selassie on the founding of the Organisation of African Unity in 1963 and hosting OAU summits in Mbabane in the 1970s.
He died in Mbabane on the twenty-first of August 1982, age eighty-three.
He is honored here as the king whose eighty-two-year reign holds the longest verified record in the documented history of monarchy.
Curated with honor.
