Zumbi was born free around 1655 on the Serra da Barriga, in the highland forest republic of Palmares — in what is now the Brazilian state of Alagoas. Palmares, founded by escaped Central Africans and their descendants around 1605, had grown into the largest community of self-liberated people in the history of the Americas, a confederation of settlements that at its height sheltered many thousands. Believed to be of Kongo descent, Zumbi was born into a lineage of that resistance; his uncle was Ganga Zumba, the quilombo's earlier king.

As a small child, roughly six years old, Zumbi was seized by the Portuguese and given to a Catholic missionary, who baptized him Francisco and schooled him in Portuguese and Latin. Yet the forest of his birth called him home. Around 1670, at about fifteen, he fled the mission and returned to Palmares, where he rose swiftly as a military strategist and a defender of his people's freedom.

When the Portuguese offered a peace that would have accepted continued bondage elsewhere in Brazil, Zumbi refused it. He held that no freedom was true while others remained enslaved. Around 1678–1680 he broke with Ganga Zumba over that treaty and became king, taking a resolute stance against the colonial power. For years his people withstood repeated military expeditions.

In 1694 the Portuguese, aided by artillery and local allies, overwhelmed the central stronghold. Zumbi escaped and led the resistance for two more years before he was betrayed, captured, and killed on 20 November 1695, his head displayed to disprove the legend of his immortality. That legend outlived the pike: in Brazil, 20 November is honored as the Day of Black Consciousness. Zumbi dos Palmares endures as an eternal emblem of dignity, freedom, and the unbroken will of a free people.
