François-Dominique Toussaint Louverture was born into slavery around 1743 on the Bréda plantation near Cap-Français, in the French colony of Saint-Domingue, the eldest son of enslaved parents brought from West Africa. He grew up amid the brutal sugar economy of the Caribbean, yet learned to read and drew on Creole, French, and his parents' Fon tongue. Freed in the 1770s, he was a man of the middle years when history called upon him.
When enslaved people rose in the great revolt of 1791, Toussaint became its guiding mind. A patient strategist, he first fought alongside Spanish forces, then joined Republican France once it moved to abolish slavery, forging a disciplined army from the formerly enslaved and outmaneuvering every empire that sought to reclaim the island.
By 1801 he governed Saint-Domingue almost entirely, promulgating a constitution that declared, "There cannot exist slaves; servitude is therein forever abolished." It was among the first sustained governments led by a formerly enslaved man of African descent in the modern Atlantic world — a living refutation of the age's cruelest lie.
In 1802 Napoleon's forces seized him by deceit and carried him to the cold Fort de Joux in the mountains of France, where, denied proper care, he died on 7 April 1803. He did not live to see full independence, yet his labor made it certain. We honor Toussaint Louverture, who broke the chain and would not bend.
