Thomas Joseph Odhiambo Mboya was born on the fifteenth of August 1930 at Kilima Mbogo, near Thika in the White Highlands of British East Africa, into a Luo family whose father, Leonardus Ndiege, laboured and rose to overseer on a sisal plantation. Educated at Catholic mission schools — St. Mary's, Yala, and then Holy Ghost College, later Mang'u High School — he first trained as a sanitary inspector before a Trades Union Congress scholarship carried him in 1955 to Ruskin College, Oxford, where he studied industrial relations and economics.

Returning home, Mboya became one of the youngest and most formidable labour organisers of his generation, leading the Kenya Federation of Labour through the taut years of the Emergency. He turned the trade union movement into a school of nationhood, entered the Legislative Council in 1957, and in 1960 helped found the Kenya African National Union, serving as its first Secretary-General and a chief negotiator at the Lancaster House talks that opened the road to independence.

In 1959, with the African-American Students Foundation, he built the Airlift Africa programme, chartering flights that bore scores of East African students to universities in the United States — a project he pressed forward with the aid of Senator John F. Kennedy and in fellowship with Martin Luther King Jr. After independence he held the portfolios of Labour, of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, and finally of Economic Planning and Development, drafting the foundational blueprint for the young nation's economy.

On the fifth of July 1969, at thirty-eight, he was shot dead on Government Road in Nairobi, his life cut short at the height of its promise. May the architect of so many others' futures be held in lasting honor.
