Sylvia Pressley was born on February 2, 1926, in Hemingway, Williamsburg County, South Carolina, to Julia and Van Pressley. Her father, a World War I veteran, died from complications of his combat injuries when Sylvia was only three days old. She and her mother were raised on her maternal grandparents' own thirty-five-acre farm, where she learned early the labor, land, and Lowcountry cooking that would shape her life's work.

As a girl of eleven, working in a bean field, she met Herbert Woods; the two married in 1944 after he followed her north to New York. There Sylvia worked as a beautician, in a hat factory, and as a waitress at Johnson's Luncheonette in Harlem. When the owner offered to sell, she bought the small counter restaurant in 1962 — borrowing the money from her mother, who mortgaged the family farm — and renamed it Sylvia's.

From a handful of stools on Lenox Avenue, Sylvia's grew into a Harlem institution. A 1979 New York magazine review by critic Gael Greene crowned her "the queen of soul food," and the restaurant became a landmark drawing neighbors, dignitaries, and travelers from around the world. She built a family enterprise, published two cookbooks, and lent her name to a line of foods, all while keeping her table rooted in dignity and welcome.

Sylvia Woods stepped back from daily operations in her later years and died on July 19, 2012, at the age of eighty-six. In 2014 a Harlem corner was co-named "Sylvia P. Woods Way." She fed a community and honored her roots at every plate — a matriarch whose warmth outlived her, and whose table still sets a place for all who come.
