Sunni Ali Ber
r. 1464 — 1492 · Founder of the Songhai Empire as a great power; conqueror of Timbuktu and Jenne; victor over the Mossi and Tuareg
Sunni Ali Ber — "Ali the Great" — rose to the throne of Songhai in 1464, succeeding the ruler Sunni Sulayman Dama. He belonged to the Sonni (Sunni) dynasty, and the chronicles remember him as its fifteenth king in one reckoning. At his accession, Songhai was still a modest realm along the upper Niger, centered on the prosperous trading city of Gao and long shadowed by the fading empire of Mali. From that inheritance he would forge one of the greatest powers sub-Saharan Africa has known.
A soldier-king of restless energy, Sunni Ali built a mobile army and a river fleet that carried his power across the Niger's flood plains. In 1468 he answered the appeal of Timbuktu's people and took the fabled city from the Tuareg who had seized it. He then turned to Jenne (Djenne), the great southern entrepot, whose long siege ended in its surrender in the early 1470s. Massina, the Inner Niger Delta, and the lands of the Sanhaja fell within his reach.
Across nearly three decades he campaigned ceaselessly — against the Mossi to the south, against Tuareg and Fulani raiders of the desert edge, and along the river frontiers. He governed as a pragmatist who observed Islamic rites yet held fast to the older beliefs of his rural subjects, balancing the merchant-scholars of the towns against the countryside from which his strength flowed. His conquest of the Sudan's leading trading cities laid the foundation for Songhai's later golden age.
He died in 1492 while on campaign, by tradition drowned crossing a river. From a small kingdom on the Niger he raised an empire, and the states that rose after him stood upon the ground he won. May Sunni Ali Ber be remembered as the founder-king who gave Songhai its greatness.
