Sundiata Keita

c. 1217 — c. 1255 · Founder of the Mali Empire; author of the Kouroukan Fouga, a 13th-century constitutional charter

Sundiata Keita was born around 1217, the son of Naré Maghann Konaté (Maghan Konfara), a Faama, or king, of the Mandinka. His birthplace is remembered as Dakadjalan, in the Mandinka heartland near the Niger River in what is now Mali, close to the present-day border with Guinea. His people were the Mandinka, also called the Malinke, and his lineage belonged to the Keita clan of the small kingdom of Kangaba.

By tradition preserved in the oral epic sung by generations of griots, the young prince was disabled from childhood and did not walk until the age of seven. Through iron leg braces and painful, patient effort, he rose to walk unaided, and the child once dismissed grew into a warrior of extraordinary will. His name, understood by many as "the lion prince," came to signify that transformation.

Around 1235 Sundiata defeated the Sosso king Soumaoro Kanté at the Battle of Kirina, breaking Sosso power and uniting the Mandinka chiefdoms under his leadership. From his capital at Niani he forged the Mali Empire, which grew into the largest and richest state West Africa had yet seen. He was the first of his line to bear the royal title Mansa.

His enduring monument is not conquest alone but law: the Kouroukan Fouga, or Manden Charter, a 13th-century assembly and code of governance recognized by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage. He died around 1255. May the lion prince who rose from the ground to raise up a nation be honored across the generations.
