Ahmed Sékou Touré was born on the ninth of January 1922 in Faranah, a town on the upper Niger in French Guinea, into a Mandinka Muslim family. He claimed descent from Samori Touré — the founder of the Wassoulou Empire, who had held French conquest at bay for some sixteen years, from 1882 until his capture in 1898. Whether that lineage ran through a grandfather or a great-grandfather remains contested in the record, but the mantle of resistance it carried shaped the man from the start.

Expelled at fifteen from a French technical school in Conakry for leading a protest, Touré came of age through the labor movement. As a postal clerk he organized what is remembered as the first successful strike in French West Africa, and by the 1940s he had risen as a trade-union leader and founder of the Democratic Party of Guinea, turning a colonial grievance into a mass political force.

In September 1958 came the hour for which he is most remembered. Alone among France's African territories, Guinea voted "No" to Charles de Gaulle's offer of association within a new French Community. "We prefer poverty in freedom to prosperity in slavery," Touré declared — and on the second of October 1958 Guinea stood forth as an independent republic, with Touré as its first president.

His long rule, lasting until his death in Cleveland, Ohio, on the twenty-sixth of March 1984, grew authoritarian and is shadowed by grave repression. Yet his voice for Pan-African freedom and his refusal to bow shaped a continent's imagination. We honor the courage of the "No" that opened a door for others to walk through.
