Sahle Selassie Wossen Seged was born in 1795 at Ankober, in the central highland kingdom of Shewa, a son of Meridazmach Wossen Seged of the Shewan branch of the Solomonic line. When his father died and a brief period of disorder followed, the young prince seized the moment, and on 12 June 1813 he was proclaimed ruler of Shewa, a throne he would hold until his death in 1847.
Across more than three decades he consolidated and enlarged a semi-independent kingdom. He pushed Shewa's frontiers into Bulga and Karayu, southeast into Arsi, and southward toward the Gurage lands, in time proclaiming himself Negus over Shewa, Yifat, and the Oromo and Gurage peoples. He rebuilt Debre Berhan, founded fortified settlements such as Angolalla, reformed taxation, restrained the use of capital punishment, and kept royal granaries against times of famine.
Curious about the wider world, Sahle Selassie welcomed foreign craftsmen and settlers and opened Shewa to Europe, concluding treaties of friendship and commerce with Great Britain and with France in 1841. He gathered firearms and skilled artisans, laying an early foundation for the modern Shewan state that his heirs would inherit.
He died on 22 October 1847 at Debre Berhan. Through his line he became the grandfather of Emperor Menelik II — for whom he is said to have chosen the name, foreseeing a great reign — and the great-grandfather of Emperor Haile Selassie I. May the builder of Shewa's kingship be remembered with the honor his enduring legacy has earned.
