Ruby Oliver

1934 — 2008 · Seattle-born American filmmaker; director of Love Your Mama of 1989, the first feature film directed by a Black American woman west of the Mississippi River; founder of the Mountain Top Productions company in 1985

Ruby L. Oliver was an American filmmaker whose single, hard-won feature earned her a lasting, if long-overlooked, place among the pioneering Black women directors of her generation. She grew up in a poor South Side neighborhood of Chicago, Illinois, the world she would one day put on screen with unflinching tenderness.

Before she ever touched a camera, Oliver spent more than twenty-three years as a day-care operator, caring for underprivileged children in her community. Only later did she enroll at Columbia College Chicago, where, in a screenwriting course, she developed the script that became Love Your Mama, drawing directly on her own life and the streets she knew.

She shot the film over five weeks in the summer of 1988, working between 35th and 40th Streets, near her childhood home, and carried it almost single-handedly — writing, producing, directing, designing the production, and even composing and singing its original songs. Love Your Mama premiered on July 1, 1989, at Chicago's Blacklight Film Festival under the title Leola, and reached wider theaters on March 5, 1993, a semi-autobiographical drama of a mother holding her family together against poverty and hardship.

Though her film long remained an obscurity beside better-remembered works of its era, Ruby L. Oliver made it on her own terms, from her own life, for her own people. We honor the quiet, stubborn courage of a woman who told her truth in her late years and left it as a gift to those who would look back.
