Rod Rodgers

1937 — 2002 · Ohio-born concert-dance choreographer; founder of the Rod Rodgers Dance Company at Manhattan in 1966; choreographer of the principal Black-Arts-Movement concert-dance works of the closing years of the 1960s and the 1970s

Rod Audrian Rodgers was born on the fourth of December 1937 in Cleveland, Ohio, into a family already devoted to the stage; his father was a vaudeville performer, and the boy came of age partly in Detroit, absorbing rhythm and movement as a birthright. From these beginnings he would become one of the defining figures of Black concert dance in America.

In 1962 Rodgers came to New York, where he studied with masters of American modern dance, including Erik Hawkins, Hanya Holm, Mary Anthony, and Charles Weidman, while drawing on the African-rooted traditions carried by Katherine Dunham and Pearl Primus. In 1963 he founded the Rod Rodgers Dance Company, the institution that would carry his vision for four decades. His signature "Rhythmdances" fused percussion and movement in works such as Percussion Suite, Tangents, and Rhythm Ritual.

Rodgers made dance a vessel for Black memory and dignity. His Poets and Peacemakers series honored Langston Hughes, Martin Luther King Jr., George Washington Carver, Duke Ellington, Harriet Tubman, and Malcolm X. A co-founder of the Association of Black Choreographers and the Coalition of Dance Arts, he brought professional dance to underserved communities and toured widely, from Portugal and Mexico to Senegal, Kenya, and Nigeria.

Rod Rodgers died on the twenty-fourth of March 2002 in New York City. He left a company, a repertory, and a generation of dancers who carry his rhythm forward. May his name endure among the honored ancestors who taught a people to move with pride.
