Norman Washington Manley was born on the fourth of July 1893 at Roxborough in Manchester Parish, Jamaica, into a family of mixed-race heritage on both sides. His father, Thomas Albert Samuel Manley, was a planter and produce dealer whose own lineage joined a Black Jamaican grandmother with a white English grandfather from Yorkshire; his mother, Margaret Ann (née Shearer), descended from a mixed-race mother and an Irish father. From these braided origins rose one of the Caribbean's finest minds.

A brilliant scholar and gifted athlete, Manley studied at Wolmer's, Beckford and Smith's, and Jamaica College before winning a Rhodes Scholarship to Jesus College, Oxford. His studies were interrupted by the First World War, in which he served with the Royal Field Artillery and earned the Military Medal for gallantry under fire. Returning to Oxford, he took a law degree with First Class Honours and was called to the Bar in 1921, coming home to Jamaica in 1922 to become the island's foremost barrister.

Moved by the labour uprisings of 1938, Manley turned his gifts to the freedom of his people, founding the People's National Party that same year. His advocacy helped secure universal adult suffrage in 1944, and he served as Chief Minister and then Premier from 1955 to 1962. As principal negotiator, he guided Jamaica through the West Indies Federation and the 1961 referendum toward nationhood, though independence in August 1962 came under his rival.

He led the PNP until his death in Kingston on the second of September 1969, and was posthumously named a National Hero of Jamaica. May the memory of Norman Manley — statesman, scholar, and father of a nation's freedom — be honored across the generations.
