Norman Wilfred Lewis was born on the twenty-third of July, 1909, in Harlem, New York City — the second of three sons of Bermudian immigrant parents. His father, Wilfred Lewis, worked as a fisherman and later a dock foreman; his mother, Diane, kept a bakery before turning to domestic work. His elder brother, Saul, became a violinist who played alongside Count Basie and Chick Webb. Lewis drew from boyhood, and after time at sea returned to Harlem, where the sculptor Augusta Savage took him under her wing and opened the door to a life in art.
Coming of age amid the Harlem Renaissance and the Depression, Lewis began in a social-realist vein, painting the labor and dignity of Black urban life. In the mid-1940s he turned toward abstraction, developing a lyrical calligraphy of small, rhythmic marks that suggested processions, crowds, and cities without ever abandoning the human presence that animated them.
By 1950 he stood among the founding generation of Abstract Expressionists, the only Black artist in the Studio 35 circle of "The Irascibles," in fellowship with Ad Reinhardt, David Smith, and others. His Migrating Birds took a Popular Prize at the 1955 Carnegie International, and canvases such as Harlem Turns White carried quiet, coded reckonings with race. A committed teacher and organizer, he co-founded the Cinque Gallery to lift emerging Black artists and taught at the Art Students League until his death on the twenty-seventh of August, 1979.
Long overlooked in his lifetime, Norman Lewis painted the multitude and the individual as one — and we honor the steady hand that made abstraction sing of a people.
