Nate Dogg

1969 — 2011 · Long Beach-born singer; principal vocal voice of West Coast G-funk; the most-featured guest vocalist of 1990s hip-hop

Nathaniel Dwayne Hale, known to the world as Nate Dogg, was born on the nineteenth of August 1969. Sources differ on his birthplace — some name Clarksdale, Mississippi, where his father pastored, while others record Long Beach, California — but his childhood was bound to both. His father, Daniel Lee Hale, was a Baptist minister, and his mother, Ruth Holmes, led the choir at the family's church in Clarksdale. He was one of six Hale children, raised amid three brothers — Samuel, Emmanuel, and Daniel Jr. — and two sisters, Pamela and LaTonia. His parents' separation brought him at fourteen to Long Beach, the city that would shape his sound.

There, in the churches of his youth, he found his instrument: a warm, unhurried baritone forged in gospel harmony. With his friend Snoop Dogg and his cousin Warren G, he formed the trio 213, named for the Long Beach area code, and stepped into a rising West Coast movement.

His voice broke through on Dr. Dre's landmark album The Chronic in 1992, where his melodic hooks became the signature sound of G-funk. In 1994 he co-wrote and sang "Regulate" with Warren G, a hit that made him a household name. Across the decade he became the most sought-after guest vocalist in hip-hop, lending choruses to countless songs and earning the honorific "King of Hooks."

After suffering two strokes, Nate Dogg died on the fifteenth of March 2011, at the age of forty-one. He was laid to rest in Long Beach. May the voice that carried a coast be remembered with honor.
