Modibo Keïta was born on 4 June 1915 in the Bamako-Coura quarter of Bamako, in French Sudan, into a Muslim family that claimed direct descent from the Keita dynasty of Sundiata Keïta, the thirteenth-century founder of the Mali Empire. Educated in Bamako and at the École normale William Ponty in Senegal, he returned home in 1936 to begin his working life as a schoolteacher — a calling that placed him among the small, articulate class of colonial-era Africans who would carry the struggle for independence.
In 1945 Keïta co-founded the Sudanese Union with Mamadou Konaté, and the movement soon joined the wider African Democratic Rally to become the US-RDA. Rising as a leading nationalist voice, he served as prime minister of the short-lived Mali Federation, and when that federation dissolved in 1960 he became the first president of the independent Republic of Mali on 23 September 1960.
As president he charted an austere path of African socialism, nationalizing industry and drawing Mali closer to the Soviet Union and China, while pursuing pan-African unity and non-alignment abroad. His mediation of the Bamako Accords, which helped end the Sand War between Morocco and Algeria, earned him the Lenin Peace Prize and marked him as a statesman of continental stature.
Economic hardship weakened his government, and on 19 November 1968 he was deposed in a bloodless coup led by Moussa Traoré. Imprisoned first at Kidal and later returned to Bamako, Modibo Keïta died in detention on 16 May 1977. He is remembered as the founding father who restored the ancient name of Mali to the modern map, and who bore his fall with the dignity of the empire whose blood he claimed.
