Louis Johnson
1930 — 2020 · North Carolina-born choreographer and dancer; the first African American student at the School of American Ballet in 1950; choreographer of the 1978 Broadway production The Wiz
Louis Johnson was born on the nineteenth of March, 1930, in Statesville, North Carolina, and came of age in Washington, D.C., where he was raised by his mother and grandmother. As a boy he trained with an acrobatics group at his local YMCA, and when that building closed for renovation the group was welcomed into the Jones-Haywood School of Ballet. There Doris Jones and Claire Haywood recognized his gift and offered him a scholarship, setting a Black child from a modest household onto the disciplined path of classical ballet.
In 1950 Johnson was accepted into George Balanchine's School of American Ballet in New York, entering a studio where Black students were then a rare sight. He studied alongside dancers such as Jacques d'Amboise, Maria Tallchief, and Chita Rivera, drew mentorship from Balanchine and Jerome Robbins, and in 1952 appeared as a guest with the New York City Ballet — a pioneering presence in a world that had rarely made room for him.
Over the decades he became known as a "choreographer to the stars," moving fluently between ballet, modern dance, Broadway, and film. He created enduring works such as Forces of Rhythm (1972) for companies including Dance Theatre of Harlem and the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, earned a 1970 Tony Award nomination for the musical Purlie, and choreographed the 1978 film adaptation of The Wiz.
Louis Johnson died on the thirty-first of March, 2020, in Manhattan, at the age of ninety. He is honored as a trailblazer who carried Black artistry into the highest halls of American dance, and who opened doors that had long been closed.
