Lobengula Khumalo was born around 1836 at Mosega, in the Transvaal, a son of Mzilikazi, the founder-king of the Ndebele (Matabele) nation. He came of age within a young kingdom forged on the Highveld by his father, whose reign ended with his death in September 1868. The succession did not pass smoothly: Lobengula's claim was contested by rival chiefs and by supporters of an older son, and only after a period of civil war did he take the throne in 1870 as the second and last king of the Ndebele.
For a generation Lobengula held sovereignty over a vast territory, commanding the disciplined regiments his father had built and receiving envoys, traders, and missionaries at his capital near Bulawayo. The discovery of gold on the Witwatersrand in 1886 turned European eyes toward his lands and those of neighbouring Mashonaland, and a stream of concession-seekers pressed upon his court.
In February 1888 he signed the Moffat Treaty of friendship with Britain, and in October 1888 the Rudd Concession with agents of Cecil Rhodes, believing he had granted a limited mining right. Both were distorted against him: the concession was used in 1889 to charter the British South Africa Company. When he grasped the deception he appealed directly to Queen Victoria, but the machinery of empire advanced.
The First Matabele War broke out in 1893. Facing invading columns, Lobengula burned his capital rather than surrender it and withdrew toward the Zambezi, where he died in early 1894. He is honoured as a sovereign who defended his people's independence against overwhelming force, and whose dignity in defeat outlasted the empire that dispossessed him.
