John Wesley Cromwell was born into slavery in Portsmouth, Virginia, on September 5, 1846, the youngest of twelve children of Willis and Elizabeth Cromwell. Freedom came not by birth but by purchase: his mother was manumitted, then used the family's earnings to buy her children and, in time, her husband, so that by June 1851 the whole family stood free. They journeyed north to Philadelphia, where young John entered the Quaker-run Institute for Colored Youth, graduating in 1864 with distinction in Greek and Latin.

He gave his early years to teaching, opening a school in Portsmouth after the war before racial hostility forced its close. Turning to the law, he studied at Howard University and was admitted to the bar in 1874; he is remembered as likely the first African American attorney to argue a case before the Interstate Commerce Commission.

Cromwell was, above all, a builder of Black institutions of mind and voice. In 1876 he founded the weekly People's Advocate, which he edited for years, and he later led the Bethel Literary and Historical Association. In 1897 he stood among the founders of the American Negro Academy, serving as its corresponding secretary and, in 1919, as its fourth president. His 1914 study, The Negro in American History, helped inspire Carter G. Woodson's movement to preserve the race's past.

He died in Washington, D.C., on April 14, 1927. May his labors as teacher, advocate, editor, and historian be held in lasting honor, a life that turned bondage into scholarship and gave his people the dignity of their own remembered history.
