John Merrick
1859 — 1919 · North Carolina-born barber and insurance founder; co-founder of the North Carolina Mutual and Provident Insurance Company in 1898; the first Black millionaire of the state of North Carolina
John Merrick was born on September 7, 1859, in Sampson County, North Carolina, into slavery. Emancipated as a child, he learned to read and write in a Reconstruction-era school, and as a young man labored in a Chapel Hill brickyard to help support his family — early work that later inspired his resolve to build something lasting for his people.
Settling in Durham around 1880, Merrick opened a barbershop and, through diligence and thrift, came to own a chain of shops serving both Black and white clientele. His work as an organizer for the fraternal insurance society the Royal Knights of King David introduced him to the mechanics of mutual protection, planting the seed of his greatest enterprise.
In 1898 Merrick, with Dr. Aaron McDuffie Moore, Charles Clinton Spaulding, and other Black community leaders, founded the North Carolina Mutual and Provident Association — later the North Carolina Mutual Life Insurance Company — and served as its first president. Under his leadership it grew into the largest Black-owned business in the United States, anchoring Durham's celebrated "Black Wall Street." He also helped establish the Mechanics and Farmers Bank and other Durham enterprises, becoming widely regarded as the state's first Black millionaire.
A steadfast patron of education and community welfare, Merrick supported schools, Lincoln Hospital, and the Durham Colored Library. He led North Carolina Mutual until his death on August 6, 1919. May his name endure as a builder who turned dignity and industry into an inheritance for generations.
