John William Coltrane was born in Hamlet, North Carolina, on the twenty-third of September 1926 and was raised in nearby High Point. He came of age surrounded by music and the church, and in September 1943, during his high-school years, he took up the saxophone, having first played clarinet and alto horn in a community band. Drawn to the sound of Lester Young and Johnny Hodges, he moved to Philadelphia to study and immerse himself in its jazz life.

He served in the U.S. Navy in 1945 and 1946, stationed at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii, where he played in a band and made his first informal recordings. Returning to civilian life, he worked through the demanding schools of rhythm-and-blues and bebop, playing alongside Dizzy Gillespie before switching his focus decisively to the tenor saxophone.

His art deepened through landmark associations: the Miles Davis Quintet from 1955, a transformative apprenticeship with Thelonious Monk in 1957, and, from 1960, his own celebrated quartet. Across Giant Steps, My Favorite Things, and the sublime A Love Supreme, recorded in 1964, he pressed jazz through hard bop and modal invention toward a searching, spiritual freedom.

John Coltrane died of liver cancer on the seventeenth of July 1967, at only forty years of age, in Huntington, New York. His seeking spirit and boundless devotion to sound endure; may his honored memory forever sing.
