James Baldwin

1924 — 1987 · Novelist and essayist; the moral voice of mid-century American letters

James Arthur Baldwin was born on the second of August, 1924, at Harlem Hospital in New York City, the eldest of the nine children in his household. His mother, Emma Berdis Jones, married David Baldwin, a laborer and storefront preacher, who raised James and gave him his name. Reared in poverty and under a stern religious discipline, the boy found refuge in the written word and in the fervor of the church.

At fourteen he underwent a searing religious conversion and became a young minister, preaching full sermons in Harlem's storefront congregations for some three years. That pulpit — its cadence, its music, its moral urgency — would echo through every sentence he later wrote, even after he laid the ministry down to give himself wholly to literature.

In 1948 Baldwin sailed for Paris, seeking distance from a country that constrained him as both a Black man and a homosexual. Abroad and at home he built an incomparable body of work: the novels Go Tell It on the Mountain, Giovanni's Room, Another Country, and If Beale Street Could Talk, and the essay collections Notes of a Native Son and The Fire Next Time. His prose married private anguish to public conscience, laying bare the psychology of American race and identity.

He became the moral voice of mid-century American letters, a witness who refused both despair and easy comfort. On the first of December, 1987, he died of stomach cancer in Saint-Paul-de-Vence, France. His words remain a lamp for all who seek to see their country, and themselves, without flinching. We honor the clarity and the courage he left behind.
