Imhotep flourished in the late 27th century BCE, roughly c. 2667 to c. 2600 BCE, during the Third Dynasty of Egypt's Old Kingdom. Though later tradition wove legends around his origins, the sources record only that he rose as a commoner, and no reliable record preserves the city of his birth. His historicity is beyond doubt: his name and titles survive on a statue base of the pharaoh Djoser, carved within his own lifetime.
In service to Djoser he held the highest offices of the realm — chancellor to the king, Administrator of the Great Palace, and High Priest of the sun god Ra at Heliopolis. As chief architect he conceived the Step Pyramid at Saqqara, stacking mastabas one upon another into a monument rising some 60 metres. It stands as the oldest surviving colossal structure of hewn stone, and among the earliest known uses of dressed-stone columns to bear a building.
Across the centuries his fame deepened into legend. Later Egyptians revered him as a patron of medicine and scribes, and tradition linked him to the rational, methodical healing preserved in the Egyptian medical tradition. The Greeks in time equated him with Asclepius, their own god of healing, carrying his memory far beyond the Nile.
Around 525 BCE, some two thousand years after his death, Imhotep was raised to full godhood — one of only two mortals in all Egyptian history to be so honored. From master builder to remembered deity, his name endured longer than the stone he raised. May the first architect known to history rest honored, and his memory stand as enduring as his pyramid.
