Henri Duparc
1941 — 2006 · Forecariah-born Ivorian filmmaker; director of Bal poussière of 1988 and Le Sixième doigt of 1990; principal comic-realism auteur of West African cinema
Henri Duparc was born on the twenty-third of December 1941 at Forécariah, in what was then French Guinea, and he would become one of the founding voices of West African cinema. Drawn to the moving image as a young man, he left home to study film first at the Institute of Cinematography in Belgrade and then at the Institut des hautes études cinématographiques (IDHEC) in Paris, mastering a craft that few of his generation on the continent had the chance to learn.
His work carried him to Côte d'Ivoire, where he joined the Société Ivoirienne de Cinéma and made the country his adopted home, coming to hold both Guinean and Ivorian nationality. There he began a filmmaking career that spanned nearly four decades, opening with Mouna, ou le rêve d'un artiste in 1969 and continuing with Abusuan in 1972, which earned a special mention at the Panafrican Film and Television Festival of Ouagadougou.
Duparc became the great comic realist of African cinema, using laughter and social satire to examine the tensions of modern African life. His most celebrated film, Bal poussière of 1988, a warm comedy on the strains of polygyny, delighted audiences in Côte d'Ivoire and France alike and remains his most beloved work. He followed it with Le Sixième doigt in 1990, Rue Princesse in 1994, Une couleur café in 1997, and Caramel in 2004, sustaining a body of work marked by humour, humanity, and unflinching social observation.
He died on the eighteenth of April 2006 in Paris, at the age of sixty-four. Henri Duparc is honored as a pioneer who taught a continent to see itself with tenderness and wit, and whose films endure as a gift to all who cherish African storytelling.
