Yohannes I, remembered as Yohannes the Righteous and bearing the throne name Aelaf Sagad, was born about 1640, the fourth son of Emperor Fasilides of the Solomonic dynasty. He came of age in the newly founded capital of Gondar, the city his father had raised as the fixed heart of a once-itinerant monarchy. When Fasilides died in 1667, a council of the realm's senior dignitaries, urged by the noble Blattengeta Malka Krestos, raised Yohannes to the throne as negusa nagast.

His reign opened in a spirit of mercy. He proclaimed an amnesty for those imprisoned under his father and lifted the tax on cattle, winning the goodwill of his people. He continued the great work of building Gondar, adding to the palaces and churches that made the city a wonder of the Ethiopian highlands and a seat worthy of the ancient crown.

A devout guardian of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church, Yohannes convened church councils to bring order to a divided realm. In 1668 a council addressed the laws of marriage between kin and set measures ordering the residence of Muslims and foreigners; in 1679 he summoned another council to answer a contentious letter from the clergy of Lasta. He married Sabla Wangel, a daughter of Gabra Maskal, whose union with him would later be contested by the churchmen of the age.

He led expeditions into Lasta and reordered the defenses of his provinces before falling ill at Aringo, west of Debre Tabor. Carried back toward Gondar, he died on the 19th of July, 1682, and was laid to rest with honor. May the memory of Yohannes the Righteous, builder and reconciler, be held in lasting reverence.
