William Felton Russell was born on the twelfth of February 1934 in West Monroe, Louisiana, the younger of the two sons of Charlie Russell and Katie Russell. His father labored in a paper factory and later as a truck driver and steelworker, and the family knew the daily indignities of the segregated South. When Russell was still a boy, his parents joined the Second Great Migration, carrying the family west to Oakland, California, in search of better schools and work. His mother died when he was twelve, a wound he carried for life.
At the University of San Francisco, Russell led the Dons to consecutive national championships and captained the United States to gold at the 1956 Melbourne Olympic Games. Joining the Boston Celtics that same year, he redefined the game as a defensive genius, transforming shot-blocking and rebounding into arts of quiet dominance rather than mere statistics.
Across thirteen seasons, from 1956 to 1969, Russell anchored the Celtics to eleven NBA championships, the greatest dynasty in the history of American team sport. In 1966 he was named the franchise's player-coach, becoming the first African American head coach of any major North American professional team, and he guided Boston to two further titles in that dual role.
Beyond the hardwood, Russell stood unbowed for civil rights, marching, speaking, and enduring the era's cruelties with dignity. He was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2011 and died on the thirty-first of July 2022. May his towering integrity, on the court and in the world, be honored for as long as the game is played.
