Known as
Last sovereign emperor of the Inca before the Spanish conquest.

Atahualpa was the last emperor to rule the Inca world, born about 1502, a son of the great Sapa Inca Huayna Cápac. He inherited an empire already shadowed by the coming of Europe.

On his father’s death the realm fell into civil war between Atahualpa and his half-brother Huáscar; Atahualpa’s generals prevailed, taking Cusco in 1532 just as a small band of Spaniards under Francisco Pizarro landed on the coast.

At Cajamarca in November 1532 the Spanish ambushed and seized him. Though he filled a room with gold and silver for his ransom, Pizarro did not free him.

In July 1533 he was put to death by the garrote, and with him the independent Inca state came to its end. Honored among the Great Ones of every civilization; kept here so the memory is never lost.
